“....I thrashed this lame excuse for a car around the West Fjords of Iceland. Over snow covered passes, on muddy narrow roads, driving it like a rally car, sometimes not seeing another human for hours. Yes I was fearing for my life most of the time, as you would expect driving a glorified lawn mower through the West Fjords, but it was the funnest solo road trip I’ve ever done!”

I’ve been in Iceland and I had one of those. Mine was a Hyundai i10, that one might be the Kia version but they’re basically the same. The most basic car I’ve driven in years - manual windows, manual locks, aftermarket radio, one airbag, manually adjusted mirrors.
It was absolutely fine though, except that it cost €500 for a week.

...one day, Iceland! One day I will conquer your roads... and ditches... and meet the entire medical team

I did a day trip driving a small, slow 5spd 5 door rental from Reykjavik to Hofn & back for fun with a few friends. Beautiful country, definitely well worth it!
